LA NOTTE DELLA TARANTA | 20th Edition | 26 August 2017 | Malpignano

Every year, more than 100,000 people take over the streets in Melpignano, dancing to the sound of the tambourine, infecting with their enthusiasm rock stars and artists of the diverse music genres, called to perform the Concertone on stage, the final act of this festival established in 1998. Dedicated to the rediscovery and promotion of Salento’s folk music and its crossovers with other musical languages, from world music to rock, jazz and symphonic music, the festival starts around August 8 featuring daily concerts in 14 different piazzas, including Lecce, and ending with the grand finale in Melpignano.
The big standout is the Night of Taranta Folk Orchestra, which has among its masters Giovanni Sollima, Ambrogio Sparagna, Mauro Pagani, Ludovico Einaudi, Goran Bregovic and Stewart Copeland. The 2016 edition was directed by Carmen Consoli and dedicated to Rina Durante, a Salento writer and scholar who researched and added value to the Salento popular culture. The Festival hosts several guests, Italian stars and artists from the international music scene, although the Pizzica remains the song and dance staple of this liberating experience to live during the Salento starry nights.

“La Notte della Taranta” is Italy’s biggest music festival and one of Europe’s most important events dedicated to traditional culture. It takes place in Salento and is dedicated to the re-discovery and valorization of Salento’s folk music and its fusion with other types of music – from world music to rock, from jazz to classical music.

The Festival’s formula, which culminates in the “Final Concertone di Melpignano” (Lecce), is made unique by inviting a “Maestro Concertatore” to arrange and interpret classics from the local musical tradition, directing a group of nearly thirty musicians from Salento together with exceptional guests from Italy and abroad. The “Concertone” alone attracts around one-hundred and fifty thousand spectators, while tens of thousands follow the final rehearsals the day before.
